Hey guys! I’ve submitted before but I never saw it get published, so I thought I’d submit again.
This is a picture of my first ever tattoo. It’s the words “I don’t believe it’s bad”. It’s from the song “Otherside” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Chilis are my all time favourite band, and their music has gotten me through so many hard times. This particular song has extra special meaning to me though. Anthony Kiedis wrote the lyrics to this song about his battle with drug addiction. How it was toxic and nasty and physically bad for him, although despite all the negative things it brings, there are also positives, like experiences and lessons he learns about himself and life that he otherwise wouldn’t have. That line refers to him reflecting on his drug addiction and deciding he doesn’t believe it was a bad thing because he always gained something positive from it through all the negativity. I think of the song in regards to my battle with severe clinical depression this year. It nearly killed me (by my own hands), and was by far the hardest thing I’ve ever been through. I didn’t think I was going to make it. But I did, I sought help and learnt that I am strong enough to overcome the hardest battle I will ever face. I moved to a city two and a half hours away from my comfort zone, took up roller derby and met amazing new people- all in the hopes of recovering from Depression. So although it was bleak and horrible, I don’t believe it’s bad because I gained so much positivity from it :)
